Nassau, Bahamas - Organizers of the 3rd Annual Nocturne New Year’s Golf Challenge seem to have their priorities right.  At least they do, as far as golfers are concerned.  They plan to start out the New Year playing golf!

The setting for the New Year’s Golf Challenge is the tried and true Cable Beach Golf Course, with its familiar layout of wide open fairways, approachable greens and beguiling water hazards. The low handicap golfers are licking their chops as they ponder the challenge – and the opportunity.

But these hazards make their presence known when least expected.  Like when long hitters drop their guard, ever so briefly, and “tee off” with their driver instead of their three wood on the 1st hole. Or when over-zealous (another name for greedy) golfers shoot too close to the fairway ridge on the short par-4 10th hole.  Or when timid souls “skull” their tee shot on the short, but daunting elevated par-3 signature 13th hole.  Or when erstwhile solid hitters watch with dismay as their tee shots inexplicably fade to the right on the 16th hole.  Ditto, the 17th hole.  In each case, the result is the same: ball in the water, loss of points - and inevitable defeat.

Cable Beach Golf Club is a historic course which has hosted itinerant golfers of every social strata from the early 1940’s until now.  It provides abundant evidence that every golf course deserves to be approached with a healthy dose of respect, even from the most skilled golfers.

The 3rd Annual Nocturne New Year’s Golf Challenge begins with a familiar format: a 7:00 a.m. Registration & Pairing Breakfast of Boil Fish, or Stew Fish with Grits or Johnny Cake.  And loads and loads of fun!  The energy is high.  The adrenaline is still pumping from the early morning Junkanoo Parade.  The results are not yet known, so the air is still full of bravado about which group would have won the Parade.  There will be time to sleep later.  The first priority is golf.  And in the mind of each player, the tournament is there for the taking!

The format is a Two-Man, Best Ball Scramble.  Each participant in the tournament has a chance.  One does not have to be highly skilled to win.  Just lucky.  This is the golfers’ version of democracy.  Under the two-man scramble format, each player on a team hits his (or her) own ball, but is able to play from the best ball hit on each stroke by either partner.  There is redemption to be had, after all, for bad shots.

The winning team will take home a tremendous Grand Prize – a 3 day/2 night stay at a deluxe two-bedroom, two and a half bath golf villa at Castle Pines, PGA Village in Port St. Lucie, FLORIDA, along with two roundtrip tickets on Continental Connection.  The Castle Pines villa also features a full kitchen, living room, dining room and dedicated laundry room with washer & dryer.

PGA Village is well known to Bahamian golfers. Castle Pines is surrounded by several PGA signature golf courses.  Just up the street is the PGA Learning Centre, an ideal location for the beginner to get professional golf instruction.  It features video swing instruction.  It features a variety of putting greens. It features a large practice tee. And it also features sand trap replicas from several famous courses throughout the world.

The winning team would find that, amidst the peace and quiet of Port St. Lucie, the shopping is simply superb.  Walmart is a two-minute drive away.  Fifteen minutes north (on I-95) is the Discount Shopping Outlet at Vero Beach with a bonanza of brands at greatly reduced prices, such as Liz Clairborne, Kasper, Dress Barn, Haggar, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Nine West, Lacoste and Corning Ware.

But the ultimate winner is charity.  The beneficiary of all proceeds of the 3rd Annual Nocturne New Year’s Golf Challenge is the Samaritan Ministries, for the third consecutive year.  The Samaritan Ministries is made up of a cadre of dedicated, committed persons who function effectively - but without publicity or fanfare – while attending to those individuals impacted by AIDS and HIV.  This non-denominational charity is headed by Sister Clare Rolle of the Catholic Benedictine Monastery, Nassau Street.

Nocturne is headed by an intrepid leader, Shawn Thomas, a veteran golf tournament Organizer and Humanitarian.  “Our goal,” explained Shawn, “is to make a difference in the lives of persons in need through the avenue of golf.  We invite even non-golfers to come out to Cable Beach Golf Course on New Year’s morning join the Putting Contest to support a worthy cause.”

Early registration for the 3rd Annual Nocturne New Year’s Golf Challenge can be done by accessing www.tournevents.com/nocturnegroup , or e-mailing Chris Lewis, Director of Golf at Cable Beach Golf Course ( chlewis@cablebeachresorts.com ), or Shawn Thomas at shawnbthomas@gmail.com

Bill Hilbig: Vero’s Stegmaier leading at Q-school

Bill Hilbig

Bill Hilbig

Vero Beach resident Brett Stegmaier spent most of the past year competing on the Gateway and Minor League golf tours. On Wednesday, the former University of Florida player took a very good first step toward hitting the big time.

Stegmaier fired a 6-under-par 66 to take a one-shot lead in the PGA Tour’s second-stage qualifying tournament at Southern Hills Plantation Golf Club in Brooksville.

The Brooksville event is one of four second-stage tournaments that started Wednesday. Two more will be played next week. A percentage of players from each tournament — roughly the top 20 finishers and ties — will advance to the Q-School finals on Dec. 3-8 at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif.

At Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Ga., part-time Palm City resident Carlos Franco is tied for second at 67, one shot off the lead. Franco is a 42-year-old veteran from Paraguay with four career wins in five seasons on the PGA Tour.

Derek Fathauer of Jensen Beach also is in the field at Pine Mountain. He opened with 70 and is tied for 28th. Another tour veteran, Olin Browne of Tequesta, is tied for 40th at 71. Former Vero resident Tripp Isenhour of Orlando was disqualified.

At Hombre Golf Club in Panama City, Sal Spallone and Ryan Cobb of VERO BEACH are tied for 22nd at 71. Tequesta’s Per-Ulrik Johansson is tied for 32nd, one shot behind. And Jim Herman of Port St. Lucie is tied for 42nd at 73.

OUTSTANDING EFFORT

A pair of players from the Treasure Coast had huge rounds at the Junior Players’ Tour event over the weekend at the Florida Club in Stuart.

James Monnerville, 15, of Vero beach shot back-to-back 68s on the 6,589-yard course for a two-day total of 136 (8 under par). Andrew Goodman, 16, of Palm City finished at 5-under (68, 71).

BIRD TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

Today at 5 p.m. is the deadline for registering for the 16th annual Dick Bird Treasure Coast Team Championship.

The event — a two-player team tournament with a modified Pinehurst for the first round and better ball of partners for the second — is Saturday and Sunday at Sandridge in Vero Beach.

There are four divisions: Senior Division (age 50 and older), Mixed Division (male/female), Championship Division and Men’s Division.

The entry fee is $240 per team and entry forms are available online at www.sandridgegc.com.

SEBASTIAN OPEN

The Sebastian Open, a two-day, individual stroke-play event, will be Nov. 22-23 at Sebastian Golf Course.

Divisions include Men’s, Senior (50-plus), Super Senior (60-plus), Women and Professional. The entry fee is $100 for amateurs and $200 for professionals. The entry deadline is next Thursday at noon and the field is limited to the first 144 players.

For more information, call the golf shop at (772) 589-6801 or visit www.sebastiangolfcourse.org.

Local tennis: Swingtime set to swing into town Nov. 22-23

STORY TOOLS

The countdown is on in earnest. Another “Swingtime” tennis special is coming up Nov. 22-23 at The Players Club & Spa at Lely Resort.

One of the headliners of the 10th annual event benefiting the Tim & Tom Gullikson Foundation is Florida-based touring pro Mardy Fish. Others on this year’s Swingtime celebrity guest list are current and former tennis stars Sebastien Grosjean, Xavier Malisse, Corina Morariu, MaliVai Washington, Jimmy Arias, Wendy Turnbull, Harold Solomon, Brian Gottfried, Ricardo Acuna, Jay Berger and Lori McNeil.

Guests outside the sphere of tennis will be actress Robin Givens and actor Michael Lombardi from FX’s “Rescue Me,” announcer Brett Haber, baseball’s Mike Cuellar, Rennie Stennett and Bill Gullickson, and football’s Jim “Crash” Jensen, Troy Drayton, Marvin Jones, Don Silvestri and Tom Sorensen.

Fish will bring a high-profile resume to Naples. He has posted some great results in 2008.

Fish’s noteworthy outing at Indian Wells included victories over three top-10 players: then No. 4 Nikolay Davydenko of Russia in the third round, then No. 7 David Nalbandian in the quarterfinals, and then No. 1 Roger Federer in the semifinals. Ultimately, he lost to No. 3 Novak Djokovic of Serbia in a three-set final.

The VERO BEACH native, who now has homes both in Tampa and Los Angeles,, Calif., also reached the semifinal in Los Angeles as well as the quarterfinals at San Jose, Delray Beach, Houston and the U.S. Open.

His quarterfinal finish at the U.S. Open marked his second career quarterfinal showing at a Grand Slam. He reached the final eight at the 2007 Australian Open.

In his career thus far, Fish has won two singles and four doubles titles on the ATP Tour. He captured the silver medal in singles at the 2004 Athens Games and participates on the U.S. Davis Cup team.

Off the court, Fish has had an interesting year, too, having walked down the aisle with fiancé, attorney and “Deal or No Deal” model Stacey Gardner, in September.

Fish says he enjoys participating in events like the “Swingtime” special.

“I love being a part of charity events, because for us, it is so easy to do,” he said. “It’s an opportunity to do what we love to do and be able to help people while doing it — what could be better than that? Swingtime is an awesome event and I look forward to coming year-in-year-out.”

With 2008 pretty much behind him, Fish already is gearing up mentally and physically for an even stronger 2009.

“My goals are to get back into the top 20 in the world,” said the man currently at No. 25. “I am real close now and it feels like I’m only one great tournament away from doing that.”

Tickets for “Swingtime’s” tennis exhibition are $70 for box seats and $35 for general admission. Call 800-927-7242.

There also is a golf pro-am that will take place at Olde Cypress. For more information or to purchase spots in the tennis pro-am, golf pro-am, or invitations to the Swingtime Gala, phone 561-394-9190 or visit the Web at www.chevents.com.
