Mardy Fish to play Andy Murray at charity event

VERO BEACH — Andy Murray, currently ranked No. 4 in the world, will play Mardy Fish in a tennis exhibition as part of the Mardy’s Tennis and Jake’s Music Fest.

The Dec. 13 Fest will include a morning Pro-Am golf tournament, the 3 p.m. exhibition between Murray and Fish, and country artist and Vero Beach native Jake Owen’s concert that night. On Dec. 12, a Dinner Party will be held at the Grand Harbor Beach Club.

Fish, also a Vero Beach native, will have his hands full against Murray, who won a 6-4, 6-2 Master Cup match over Gilles Simon on Wednesday in Shanghai. Murray is undefeated in the elite eight-man field, beating Roger Federer, a four-time Master Cup winner, on Monday.

Murray, 21, has a 57-15 singles record this year, which includes five titles, and has earned $3,055,648. The Dunblane, Scotland native has beaten 11 Top 10 players in 2008.

Fish, currently ranked No. 23, is having one of his best season’s ever, which includes a quarterfinalist U.S. Open effort, a victory over Federer earlier in the year and $847,690 in earnings.

Fish and Murray will play best of three sets, with the third being a superset tiebreak.

Owen, who was nominated for a 2008 Country Music Award for “Vocal Event of the Year,” appeared on the 42nd CMA Awards show Wednesday in Nashville as a presenter.

Mardy’s Tennis and Jake’s Music Fest benefits the Mardy Fish Foundation, which Fish created to support youth organizations in Indian River County. Fish formed the Foundation in 2006, joining forces with Owen to create an event that has benefited the Vero Beach Community.
