GOLF JAN 1 2007 9149 Riccardo 3rd Annual Nocturne New Years Golf Challenge

Nassau, Bahamas – Organizers of the 3rd Annual Nocturne New Year’s Golf Challenge seem to have their priorities right.  At least they do, as far as golfers are concerned.  They plan to start out the New Year playing golf!

The setting for the New Year’s Golf Challenge is the tried and true Cable Beach Golf Course, with its familiar layout of wide open fairways, approachable greens and beguiling water hazards. The low handicap golfers are licking their chops as they ponder the challenge – and the opportunity.

But these hazards make their presence known when least expected.  Like when long hitters drop their guard, ever so briefly, and “tee off” with their driver instead of their three wood on the 1st hole. Or when over-zealous (another name for greedy) golfers shoot too close to the fairway ridge on the short par-4 10th hole.  Or when timid souls “skull” their tee shot on the short, but daunting elevated par-3 signature 13th hole.  Or when erstwhile solid hitters watch with dismay as their tee shots inexplicably fade to the right on the 16th hole.  Ditto, the 17th hole.  In each case, the result is the same: ball in the water, loss of points – and inevitable defeat.

Cable Beach Golf Club is a historic course which has hosted itinerant golfers of every social strata from the early 1940′s until now.  It provides abundant evidence that every golf course deserves to be approached with a healthy dose of respect, even from the most skilled golfers.   981128d788d879c 3rd Annual Nocturne New Years Golf Challenge

The 3rd Annual Nocturne New Year’s Golf Challenge begins with a familiar format: a 7:00 a.m. Registration & Pairing Breakfast of Boil Fish, or Stew Fish with Grits or Johnny Cake.  And loads and loads of fun!  The energy is high.  The adrenaline is still pumping from the early morning Junkanoo Parade.  The results are not yet known, so the air is still full of bravado about which group would have won the Parade.  There will be time to sleep later.  The first priority is golf.  And in the mind of each player, the tournament is there for the taking!

The format is a Two-Man, Best Ball Scramble.  Each participant in the tournament has a chance.  One does not have to be highly skilled to win.  Just lucky.  This is the golfers’ version of democracy.  Under the two-man scramble format, each player on a team hits his (or her) own ball, but is able to play from the best ball hit on each stroke by either partner.  There is redemption to be had, after all, for bad shots.

The winning team will take home a tremendous Grand Prize – a 3 day/2 night stay at a deluxe two-bedroom, two and a half bath golf villa at Castle Pines, PGA Village in Port St. Lucie, Florida, along with two roundtrip tickets on Continental Connection.  The Castle Pines villa also features a full kitchen, living room, dining room and dedicated laundry room with washer & dryer.

PGA Village is well known to Bahamian golfers. Castle Pines is surrounded by several PGA signature golf courses.  Just up the street is the PGA Learning Centre, an ideal location for the beginner to get professional golf instruction.  It features video swing instruction.  It features a variety of putting greens. It features a large practice tee. And it also features sand trap replicas from several famous courses throughout the world.

The winning team would find that, amidst the peace and quiet of Port St. Lucie, the shopping is simply superb.  Walmart is a two-minute drive away.  Fifteen minutes north (on I-95) is the Discount Shopping Outlet at Vero Beach with a bonanza of brands at greatly reduced prices, such as Liz Clairborne, Kasper, Dress Barn, Haggar, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Nine West, Lacoste and Corning Ware.

But the ultimate winner is charity.  The beneficiary of all proceeds of the 3rd Annual Nocturne New Year’s Golf Challenge is the Samaritan Ministries, for the third consecutive year.  The Samaritan Ministries is made up of a cadre of dedicated, committed persons who function effectively – but without publicity or fanfare – while attending to those individuals impacted by AIDS and HIV.  This non-denominational charity is headed by Sister Clare Rolle of the Catholic Benedictine Monastery, Nassau Street.

Nocturne is headed by an intrepid leader, Shawn Thomas, a veteran golf tournament Organizer and Humanitarian.  “Our goal,” explained Shawn, “is to make a difference in the lives of persons in need through the avenue of golf.  We invite even non-golfers to come out to Cable Beach Golf Course on New Year’s morning join the Putting Contest to support a worthy cause.”

Early registration for the 3rd Annual Nocturne New Year’s Golf Challenge can be done by accessing www.tournevents.com/nocturnegroup , or e-mailing Chris Lewis, Director of Golf at Cable beach golf Course ( chlewis@cablebeachresorts.com ), or Shawn Thomas at shawnbthomas@gmail.com
