Of all the island nations on Earth, there is, perhaps, none quite so obsessed by fish as Japan. Whether for food or entertainment, fish are at the very core of Japanese identity. From their reverential love of jewel-like koi to the seemingly barbaric world of scientific whaling via the balletic submarine ballet of the drive hunt, there are few corners of Japanese culture that have not been shaped by reference to fish.
Trying to comprehend this ‘alien’ culture, Charles embarks on a six-week odyssey through Japan, determined to use his love of fish and fishing as the common point of interest between himself and those he meets along the way. This 450 pound black marlin was caught off Cairns, Australia. After about 22 minutes it panicks and goes down deep, where the sharks live. Big mistake. At least we got to keep the Bill! As for the size, its the Captain who makes the call, not me. Barry Cross (skip) estimated it to be around 450lbs, so thats what i go with even though i might agree with some that its closer to 350 than 450. For a reference, at the end of the video when i’m holding the head, i’m 6’4″. It might also be helpful to know that the boat is 65ft long and has a beam (width) of 17.5ft. We caught over 300 Ling Cod, many Red Snappers a few Halibut. The wildlife was fantastic! Many Killer Whales, Bald Eagles and Huge Octopus.
