Thursday, March 31, 2011 – Las Vegas, NV: Iconic athletes, actors, comedians, and rock stars were on the links for the opening of the 10th Annual Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational Tournament (MJCI). This is the first time the MJCI is being held in Las Vegas.
Fans were rewarded as gracious celebrities attending to help charity complied with the many autograph requests and were in fine spirits as they got ready to tackle the challenging course.
First Round “Round Up” of Celebrity-Amateur Competition
Celebrity players were paired with four amateur participants for the 36-hole best ball tournament. The action began early after sunrise in the desert as the celebrities and amateur golfers hit the links, and it didn’t take long for the distinct sound of smack talk intended for the host began to break the pristine calm of the magnificent Shadow Creek golf Course.
Toward the end of the first day’s action Brett Hull’s group was 20 below par with Michael Jordan pressing him one stroke behind. On 13, Michael nails a 20 foot birdie to keep his team in the hunt. Then on 18, Jordan sinks a 6 footer to remain two back to end the day…Boxer Winky Wright has the lead by one shot with a late surge.
The top of the leaderboard looked like this after the first day:
Winky Wright -21
Brett Hull -20
Michael Jordan -19
Wayne Gretzky -16
John Smoltz -16
Maury Povich -15
Tourney To Benefit Charities

Jordan Foundation (dedicated to strengthening families, motivating youth and ensuring high quality academic opportunities for children in under-served communities) the Nevada Cancer Institute, and Cats Care (the Charlotte Bobcats’ commitment to bringing positive and lasting change through social responsibility, education, fitness, and youth and family development).
After Jordan’s group putted out on the 18th setting up an exciting finale Friday, he and his teammates took time to remember their rewarding day with a group photo.
